(hed)p.e.-"Broke"(2000) review

Following the release of their impressive self-titled debut album, (hed)p.e. would go on to tour with acts such as Stuck Mojo, Snot, Sevendust, Soulfly, Korn, Monster Magnet, Kid Rock, System Of A Down, and even play on the 1999 Ozzfest tour sharing the second stage with bands such as: Fear Factory, Static-X, Slipknot, & Drain STH. Despite the awesome tour schedule they had, their debut album wasn't much of a success. So with their debut album not being much of a commercial success, their second album, "Broke", sees (hed)p.e. going from their self-described "G-Punk" sound to a more traditional Nu Metal sound, but does that mean it's a bad album? No, it's actually my favorite (hed)p.e. album and let's find out why as I review it track-by-track(*not including hidden or bonus tracks*).

1. Killing Time
The album starts off with the song that made me fall in love with this band and also one of their most well known singles. An excellent rap metal song that was also the theme tune for the movie "3000 Miles To Graceland." Awesome rapping and vocals from Jared, great guitar playing from Wes & Chad, and a classic and memorable chorus that will get stuck in your head. A rap metal classic.
Rating: 5/5

2. Waiting To Die
After an excellent opener, we then get a heavier version of their self-described "G-Punk" sound with this track and the result is....ANOTHER excellent track. Jared's aggressive vocals in the verses make the rapping in this song very enjoyable along with the punk influenced guitar riffs played by featured guest East Bay Ray, guitarist of the legendary punk band Dead Kennedys. The chorus is also heavy, very memorable, and will also get stuck in your head as Jared goes from death growls to clean singing showing off his impressive range as a vocalist.
Rating: 5/5

3. Feel Good(feat. Serj Tankian from System Of A Down & Morgan Lander from Kittie)
Awesome collabo. The verses have Jared nicely rapping over a hip-hop beat with some nice guitar tapping from guitarist Wesstyle and simple but funky basslines from Mawk which leads into a heavy pre-chorus rapped well by Jared and backed by a nice screaming from Morgan Lander of the all female metal band Kittie. Plus, a nicely sung heavy chorus from System Of A Down vocalist Serj Tankian. Not as good as the previous two tracks, but still an awesome song.
Rating: 4.5/5

4. Bartender
Well here it is, the song that made (hed)p.e. famous, the first single from the album and a damn good one to. A fun rap metal song about going to a bar and trying to get laid as heard in Jared's well rapped verses backed by chill guitar playing and a nice hip-hop beat which leads into a heavy memorable chorus that will get stuck in your head. A song where every single band member stand outs and is a classic in my book.
Rating: 5/5

5. Crazy Legs
Standout members on this track are bassist Mawk and the guitarists who provide funky heavy music in the verses that goes well with Jared's rapping. Another fun rap metal track where Jared raps about what the band is all about which consists of getting laid, smoking weed, drinking, and having crazy fans which leads into a chorus that is just a re-worded version of the chorus to the Notorious B.I.G. song "Hypnotize." Awesome track.
Rating: 4.5/5

6. Pac Bell
An industrial influenced rap metal track with synthesized vocals and some aggressive rapping from Jared and judging by the lyrics, some girl has obviously pissed him off. Probably my least favorite track on the album, it's not bad, just doesn't grab my attention like the other tracks do. Plus, I find the lyrics to be quite laughable at times and it just has a really "emo" feeling to it if you know what I mean.
Rating: 3.5/5

7. I Got You
Something different on the album, besides the typical themes of partying as heard on the previous songs, this song seems to have a more political meaning behind it. The verses feature some nice crooning vocals from Jared backed by a trip-hop like drum beat from B.C. which leads into a well done heavy chorus. I see Rage Against The Machine as an influence on this track judging by the lyrical content of this song and you can definitely hear the influence in Jared's vocals when it gets to the bridge. Not a standout track, but still a great song that shows off Jared's vocal range.
Rating: 4/5

8. Boom(How You Like That)
Another fun rap metal song with hip-hop driven verses with good guitar playing that flows well with Jared's rapping, plus his lyrics range from depressing to straight-up funny which leads into a heavy memorable chorus that is just fun to sing along to, DJ Product's scratching also works very well in the song making the song sound like a more explicit version of Linkin Park. An awesome track.
Rating: 4.5/5

9. Swan Dive
A break from the hip-hop edge of the album and more depressing lyrically than the previous tracks. "Swan Dive" is alternative metal track with reggae influenced verses about climbing a mountain and contemplating suicide which leads into an epic heavy chorus that will get stuck in your head. The song is very well structured and is definitely one of those songs where every single band member stands out especially Jared whose vocals on this track range from singing to death growls to screaming. Not only one of the album's best tracks, but also one of the best (hed)p.e. songs ever written.
Rating: 5/5

10. Stevie
Ever had a girlfriend who was a compulsive liar? Here's what that song touches on as the pre-chorus says "I know you're so full of...", the verses have some nice trip-hop influence and despite the simplicity of the lyrics that Jared sings in the verses, it works well I think and it leads into a fun heavy chorus with some nice screaming from Jared and a cool rapped bridge. Plus, some awesome scratching from DJ Product at the end of the song. People may disagree with me, but I think this is an awesome song.
Rating: 4.5/5

11. Jesus (Of Nazareth)
Probably the darkest (hed)p.e. song ever written, the music in the verses is dark and creepy and goes very well with Jared's depressing lyrics that builds up into a nice heavy chorus where Jared asks Jesus to "make everything alright", as some people turn to religion when their life is in a downward spiral. But in my opinion, the bridge of the song is the standout. An awesome rap metal track, even though I will admit that it does drag a bit.
Rating: 4.5/5

12. The Meadow
Like their first album, the album ends on a softer note which is also the final single from the album. A nice trip-hop influenced slow rock song about a failed relationship with a chorus that will get stuck in your head. Maybe not as interesting musically or lyrically as "Bitches" from their previous album as this song has a more mainstream sound to it, but still an awesome track and a great way to close this album.
Rating: 4.5/5

Overall this is my favorite (hed)p.e. album mainly because of it's memorable and catchy songs and also features all of the songs that got me into them("Killing Time", "Bartender", "Swan Dive", "The Meadow"). It may not be as original as their self-titled debut, but (hed)p.e. still show that they truly were one of the best bands of the rap metal genre by still having a unique way of blending Metal and Hip-Hop together along with elements of Punk, Trip-Hop, Reggae, & even Industrial. Like Jared says in the promo of this album "we're not trying to claim that we're any style anymore, we just want to write good songs period" which is exactly what they do on this album. Saying that this is a perfect album would be too generous, but still an impressive album that made (hed)p.e. a very promising band in the Rap Metal genre.

OVERALL RATING: 9/10

Pac Bell is AWESOME! One of my favourite tracks by (hed). So f*cking brutal and different. Morgan from Kitty screaming in Feel Good? Man, all the times I've listened to that I never knew. Loving the trivia. Love your work.
